Gong Ting — Imperial Court Pu-erh
Gong Ting translates from Chinese as "imperial court". The name speaks for itself: historically, this tea was selected exclusively for the imperial family and the highest-ranking officials. It was entirely inaccessible to ordinary people — and this is not merely a romantic legend, but a reflection of the real system of tea tribute that existed in China for centuries.
What Makes Gong Ting Special
Pu-erh Gong Ting is the highest grade of shu pu-erh, produced exclusively from the youngest and most delicate parts of the tea plant: buds and the smallest leaves of the first harvest. It is precisely this that distinguishes imperial pu-erh from other grades: the finer the raw material, the deeper and more even the fermentation, and the softer and sweeter the resulting tea.
Gong Ting is easy to recognise by its appearance: small, tightly rolled leaves and buds covered in golden down — tips. It is these that give the infusion its characteristic velvety texture and sweetness, which coarser grades simply cannot match.
Flavour and Aroma
Imperial court pu-erh tea is the benchmark for softness among shu pu-erhs. The aroma is earthy and warm, with notes of prunes, dark chocolate and occasionally a hint of woody smoke. As it brews, it becomes rounder and sweeter.
The infusion is dark, almost opaque, a rich garnet or deep brown in colour. The flavour is dense, velvety and enveloping. Astringency is virtually absent — and it is precisely this quality that makes palace pu-erh tea so approachable, even for those just beginning their journey with pu-erh. The aftertaste is long and warm, with notes of honey and ripe fruit.
Gong Ting pu-erh opens up beautifully with milk: the creaminess softens the earthiness, producing a rich, deep drink reminiscent of masala chai.
Grades and Quality
Not all imperial pu-erh is the same. Quality is determined by several factors:
Tip content — the greater the proportion of golden buds in the blend, the higher the grade and the price. Pure tip-grade Gong Ting is rare and represents the pinnacle of this category.
Year of production — Gong Ting pu-erh ages well in storage. Over time, the earthiness recedes and more refined notes emerge: camphor, dried fruit and sweet wood.
Region — Yunnan producers from Menghai and Xiaguan are considered the benchmark for palace-grade pu-erh.
How to Brew
- Vessel: gaiwan or Yixing clay teapot
- Water: 95–100°C
- Amount: 5–7 g per 150 ml
- Rinse: discard the first infusion after 5 seconds
- Infusions: begin at 20–30 seconds, gradually increasing
Palace pu-erh holds up to 6–10 infusions. It is also excellent for slow steeping: place the tea in a thermos with hot water for 30–40 minutes — the result is a thick, rich brew with a caramel depth.
